Research Focus

Karla’s research background, at Piracicaba Dental School – UNICAMP in Brazil, was in the field of dental materials, with a focus in polymers and ceramics. During a brief stent in the USA she began working specifically with scaffolds and PLGA-films used for bone tissue regeneration. Currently at FIRM she is learning and improving her skills in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering techniques.

Experience and Interests

Karla studied dentistry at Rio Grande do Norte Federal University, specializing in dental prosthodontics. Her specialization thesis focused on degradation of dental ceramics. The focus of her Masters and PhD research was the analysis of dental composites, accessing their composition and behavior in clinical applications. 

In 2011 Karla worked as a guest researcher in the Biomedical Engineering Department of the University of Texas at San Antonio, USA. This brief exposure to working with scaffolds and films used in bone tissue engineering encouraged her to expand her research interests beyond the dental field.

In September 2015 she joined FIRM to continue improving her knowledge and skills applying her experience with biomaterials in the field of regenerative medicine.
